Geilo
Hiking
Geilo is a paradise for hikers. Choose from leisurely walks, scenic trail runs, long hikes across the mountain plateau, or rewarding summit hikes.
Prestholtstien
The national parks of Hallingskarvet and Hardangervidda are just a short distance from Geilo and offer countless hiking opportunities. One of our favourites is the Prestholtrunden trail, which takes you up a stone staircase of 2,339 steps to Hallingskarvet before continuing into the national park. The staircase was built by Sherpas and makes the ascent both accessible and enjoyable. The hike is approximately 6.5 kilometres long.
Around the Ustedalsfjord
This is a family-friendly walk that is suitable for both children and strollers. Along the route, you will pass the historic wooden bridge Tuftebrui and Fekjo, a Viking Age burial site. The full loop around the fjord is approximately 12 kilometres, but you can also choose the shorter Veslerunden route, which is about 5 kilometres long.
Hivjufossen (waterfall)
For an impressive hike, head to Hivjufossen, one of Norway's most famous waterfalls. The waterfall is 250 meters high and consists of two main falls and several rapids. The hike is about 3 kilometers long.
Geilohovda
This hike offers panoramic views of Geilo, Hardangervidda and Hallingskarvet. The hike is just under 6 kilometers. From Geilo center, follow the signs and Pilvegen up to Geilohovda.
Einsetnuten
Einsetnuten is one of the most visited peaks in the area. It is a short and enjoyable summit hike offering magnificent views. You can start the hike from the parking area at Kalken or from the parking area at Einset.
Revesporet ("the fox trail") near the city center
This is a perfect family-friendly walk. It is close to the town centre, short (about 1.4 kilometres), and follows easy terrain. There is plenty to see along the way. Start at Geilojordet, where animals can be seen in summer, then continue to Geilo Kulturkyrkje, past the fishing hut at Slåttahølen and the “Huldreskogen” photo exhibition.
