Skiing experiences in the spring sun

Enjoy wonderful days of spring skiing in the sun. Glide through both powder and softer spring snow in shorts and a T-shirt, with the sun warming your skin. Several of the cross-country ski trails in the mountains offer good conditions well into spring, so just bring your skis and enjoy the trails. With the sun shining on your face and skis on your feet, this is one of the best ways to enjoy the season.

Hike to Hivju Waterfall

In spring and early summer, river levels are usually high, making the waterfalls even more dramatic than usual. Hivjufossen is one of Norway’s most impressive waterfalls and is well worth a visit. The hike is approximately 3 kilometres long and is suitable for families.

Explore the hiking opportunities

Geilo is known for it’s its endless hiking opportunities. Whether you prefer hiking, trail running, skiing, snowshoeing, or summit trips, there are fantastic options for every season. Here, we highlight some of our favourite hikes.

The national parks of Hallingskarvet and Hardangervidda are just a short distance from Geilo and offer countless hiking opportunities. One of our favourites is the Prestholtrunden trail, which takes you up a stone staircase of 2,339 steps to Hallingskarvet before continuing into the national park. The staircase was built by Sherpas and makes the ascent both accessible and enjoyable. The hike is approximately 6.5 kilometres long.

The Ustedalsfjorden loop is a family-friendly walk suitable for both children and strollers. Along the route, you will pass the historic wooden bridge Tuftebrui and Fekjo, an ancient burial site dating back to the Viking Age. The full loop around the fjord is approximately 12 kilometres long, but you can also choose the shorter Veslerunden route, which is around 5 kilometres.

Cuddling with husky puppies

Visit Geilo Husky for a soft and cozy experience. Geilo Husky not only runs dog sledding, you can also visit to greet cute husky puppies. This may be one of the nicest activities you can think of. It is open for visits and puppy cuddles from May.

Hop on your bike

The fun on two wheels extends far beyond the summer park. Near Geilo you will find Rallarvegen, one of Norway’s most famous and scenic cycling routes. The trail is 80 kilometres long and runs from Haugastøl to Flåm. You can also start your journey in Geilo for an even longer adventure.

Around Ustedalsfjorden is another nice area, perfect for families. If someone prefers tricks and jumps, the bike park below Vestlia Resort is a fun arena to test out different pump tracks and jumps, and to be social.

Excursion to Vøringsfossen Waterfall

One of the most famous waterfalls in the country is just over an hour's drive from Geilo. It's the perfect destination for a short day trip. Vøringsfossen plunges 182 metres down from the Hardangervidda plateau and ends in Måbødalen. The place is designed as a tourist destination and you get a good view of the majestic waterfall.
