Winter activities in Geilo
Geilo is a true winter paradise, with activities both on and off the slopes. The destination has been voted Norway’s best ski resort several years in a row and offers 46 alpine runs, ranging from beginner areas and family-friendly slopes to terrain parks and more challenging runs. But there is plenty to experience beyond skiing as well.
Alpine skiing
The ski resorts in Geilo are among the largest and most versatile in the country. You can find them on both sides of the valley, and there are a total of 46 slopes with trails for beginners as well as advanced skiers. Rush down the steep slopes or play in one of the fun parks.
Cross-country skiing
Geilo offers much more than alpine skiing. The destination is also one of Norway’s premier cross-country skiing areas, with over 500 kilometres of groomed trails for all skill levels. Choose from short and easy routes, scenic mountain trails, or longer excursions to mountain lodges and cafés, where you can warm up with a hot drink and something good to eat.
Fat bike
Looking for something a little out of the ordinary? With its extra-wide tyres, a fat bike lets you ride across snow-covered terrain, offering an experience similar to mountain biking – only in winter. It’s a fun and unique activity that can be enjoyed by both children and adults.
Sledding and toboggan run
Sledding guarantees a day full of laughter and big smiles. In Dagali Fjellpark you can sled 1850 meters down the country's longest toboggan run. Fun? Definitely! An absolute hit for both families and groups of friends! Take the ski lift to the top and race down.
Dog sledding
Dog sledding in the high mountains is an adventurous experience you don’t want to miss. Geilo Husky offers trips lasting 1.5–2 hours, where a team of dogs pulls you smoothly into the mountains. During the trip, you will be served hot drinks and light snacks. Imagine yourself taking part in a long distance sled dog race and experience the incredible strength of the dogs. This is one of our favourite winter activities.
Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is a great activity that everyone can enjoy. Strap on your snowshoes and head into the mountains or up to a nearby peak. Bring a snack in your backpack and enjoy the snow-covered landscape as you make your way across the snow.
Sleigh rides and winter horseback riding
Geilo Horse Center offers sleigh rides and winter horseback riding. Sleigh rides are a wonderful experience for both children and adults. Gather the family for a peaceful journey through the winter landscape of Geilo. You can also experience the snowy surroundings on horseback, riding Icelandic horses through the terrain. The ride lasts about one hour and has a minimum age limit of 12 years.
Ice bathing
It’s no wonder this has become a popular winter activity. Ice bathing has many benefits, but above all it’s a fun experience to share with others. At Ustaoset, there is also a sauna - because what's better than warming up after an icy dip? The sauna offers panoramic views, and you are guaranteed a memorable experience.
Snowmobiling
In Dagali, you can experience winter by snowmobile. Dagali Opplevelser offers a relaxed safari where you have time to enjoy the beautiful nature. They also offer snowmobile experiences on a track, which is a more action-packed activity. Here, up to 10 snowmobiles can drive at the same time, and you will navigate turns and longer straight sections. A driving licence for a car or snowmobile is required.
Summit hikes
There is something special about looking out over a snow-covered landscape from a mountain summit. After the climb, the reward feels incredible: a magical view and an exciting descent. Some great peaks for hiking include Urvassnuten, Blåbergi, Einsetnuten, and Såteggi.
